Understanding Your NDIS Budget:

Core, Capacity Building & Capital Supports

Your NDIS budget is money the NDIS gives you to help reach your goals, get support, and live a good life. It is divided into three main areas:

1. Core Supports

What is it for?

Core supports help you with daily activities, needs, and community participation.

Examples:

  • Help with personal care (showering, dressing, eating)

  • House cleaning, yard work

  • Transport to appointments or activities

  • Help to join in the community, social and civic life

Good to know: You can usually move money between your core supports if your needs change.

2. Capacity Building Supports

What is it for?

Capacity building supports help you learn new skills and become more independent.

Examples:

  • Support coordination (help to organise and use your NDIS plan)

  • Therapy (physio, occupational, speech therapy)

  • Building social skills or confidence

  • Help with employment or study

  • Training for daily life (cooking, budgeting, communication)

Good to know: Money in this budget is set for certain types of support and cannot usually be moved to other categories.

3. Capital Supports

What is it for?

Capital supports are for equipment, technology, or home modifications.

Examples:

·         Wheelchairs, walkers, hearing aids

·         Communication devices (like iPads for communication)

·         Changes to your home for safety or accessibility (ramps, rails, bathroom changes)

Good to know: Capital supports are for specific big items or changes, and you often need a quote and approval from NDIS.

Quick Tips

·         Ask for help: Your support coordinator or LAC can help you understand and use your budget.

·         Keep receipts: Always keep invoices and receipts for NDIS spending.

·         Review often: Check your budget and plan regularly so you know how much you have left.

·         Use the NDIS portal: The myGov/NDIS portal shows your current budget and spending.
