Speak Up for Yourself: How to Advocate for Your Needs

At Happiness Homecare, we want you to feel confident speaking up for what you need. You have the right to be heard, respected, and supported. Here’s how to advocate for yourself or a loved one.

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy means standing up for your rights and making sure your voice is heard—by family, support workers, the NDIS, or anyone involved in your care.

Why Advocate?

  • Get the right supports and services for you

  • Reach your goals and live the life you choose

  • Make sure your choices and rights are respected

Ways to Advocate for Yourself

1. Know Your Rights

  • You have the right to safety, respect, and choice.

  • You can make decisions about your supports.

2. Be Prepared

  • Think about what you want or need before meetings or phone calls.

  • Write down your main points and questions.

3. Speak Up

  • Tell people what you need—use “I” statements (like “I need help with…”).

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for things more than once.

4. Bring Someone With You

  • Ask a friend, family member, support worker, or advocate to join meetings.

  • You don’t have to do it alone.

5. Keep Notes

  • Write down what is discussed and any decisions made.

  • Ask for important information in writing.

6. If You’re Not Happy

  • Say so! You can ask for changes or talk to someone else.

  • You can also make a complaint.

7. Get More Help

  • Free advocates can help you speak up. Find a local advocacy service at Disability Advocacy Finder.

  • Ask us at Happiness Homecare if you want help finding an advocate.
