A Carer Guide to the NDIS

For Families and Carers Supporting Participants

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a government program that provides support for people with disability, their families, and carers. It aims to help people with disability achieve their goals and participate in community life.

Who is a Carer?

A carer is anyone (family member, friend, neighbour, or other person) who provides ongoing support and care to someone with disability. Carers play a big role in the daily life and wellbeing of participants.

How Can Carers Be Involved in the NDIS?

·         Help with Planning: Carers can attend NDIS planning meetings, share information about daily support needs, and help set goals.

·         Support Communication: Carers can help explain the participant’s needs, especially if the person has trouble communicating.

·         Advocate: Carers can speak up for the participant’s wishes and ensure their rights are respected.

·         Help Manage Supports: Some carers help organise, book, or supervise supports and services.

Your Rights as a Carer

·         You can be involved in NDIS meetings (with participant’s permission).

·         You can share your knowledge and experience with the NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator.

·         You can request information about the participant’s plan (with their permission).

·         You can ask for a Carer Statement to be included in the participant’s plan, explaining your caring role and how the NDIS can support you, too.

What is a Carer Statement?

A Carer Statement is your chance to explain:

·         The support you provide every day

·         How caring affects your own life (work, health, relationships)

·         What help or respite you might need to keep caring

You can write your own statement or ask the NDIS planner to help.

Practical Tips for Carers

·         Prepare for meetings: Write down the support you give and how it helps the participant.

·         Keep records: Keep notes, reports, and receipts for supports and services.

·         Ask questions: Don’t be afraid to ask the NDIS planner anything you’re unsure about.

·         Look after yourself: Ask about carer supports, respite, or training that might help you in your caring role.
